Urban Ag Internships 2014

CommonWealth Urban Farms is looking for two part-time interns for the 2014 season. We are a small urban farm in near NW Oklahoma City, with a 25 person CSA (subscription vegetable service) and a strong educational component. We are beginning an internship program this year. Our goal is to train future urban farmers in all aspects of successfully running an urban farm. We are looking for interns who are passionate about local food and sustainability, and who want to work hard to help urban agriculture flourish in OKC.

Job description

10 hours/week

Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, Friday mornings or afternoons – some flexibility

$8 per hour starting wage

8-9 month position: March through late November

 

Requirements

Positive attitude, flexibility, self-motivation, commitment to sustainability.

Ability to work well on a team, as well as to work alone and unsupervised.

Ability to work in difficult conditions: hot weather (100 degrees or more), cold weather (below freezing), windy or wet conditions.

Enjoyment of strenuous physical labor, willingness to work quickly and efficiently.

Desire to learn and to serve the community with what you learn.

 

What We Offer

We are a working urban farm. Our staff has decades of experience in home gardening, community gardening and market gardening. We offer the opportunity for you to work alongside us. We commit to teaching you as much as possible in all areas of urban farming: planning, record-keeping, data analysis, planting, weed/pest/disease prevention and control, soil and plant health, harvesting, post-harvest processing, marketing, community relations, advocacy, bio-remediation, rainwater harvesting, and long-term sustainability of farm and farmer.

We are a work in progress! We’re still figuring out how to create a financially and socially healthy urban ag business on a very small land base. We are constantly learning. This will be our first year to offer internships, so we’ll be learning together. We welcome your participation in the ongoing process of creating and strengthening our farm and our community.

 

To Apply

We hire from our pool of volunteers. We suggest that you volunteer with us several times, so that we can all get a sense as to whether this is a good fit. We have volunteer work times every Saturday morning from 9 am to noon, plus several other times during the week. All ages, genders, ethnicities are encouraged to apply.
